The School of Engineering was founded in 1841 and is one of the oldest Engineering Schools in the English speaking world. The Baccalaureus in Arte Ingeniaria (BAI) degree was established in 1872 and early graduates played a major role in the development of local government services and infrastructure in 19th century Ireland, whilst others contributed as far afield as India, Australia, Africa and Japan.

In 1981, a new curriculum was introduced to meet the needs of the government expansion in technological education. During the first two years, students follow a common curriculum of basic courses, and may choose from a number of modules in the third and fourth years of the degree programme. These modules are grouped in such a way as to permit students to specialise in one of the following streams of the engineering profession:

Computer Science and Statistics

The School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin, an innovative and energetic centre for academic study and research. The School, created following the amalgamation of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Statistics, is centred in the O'Reilly and Lloyd Institutes at the east end of the campus. Since its formation, it has grown to become one of the largest Schools in the University with a community of 500 undergraduates, 480 postgraduates and in excess of 150 members of staff.

The School of Physics has a long and distinguished history. A convenient starting point is 1710, when it was resolved "that ground be laid out in the south-east corner of the physick garden sufficient for erecting an Elaboratory and anatomical theatre thereupon".Physics lies at the heart of most science and technology. Even modern biology seeks to analyse many of the processes of life in terms of physical laws.

Trinity College Dublin offers four different degree courses in which Physics is a main component:

  • Science, Physics
  • Science, Physics and Astrophysics
  • Theoretical Physics
  • Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials

First-year students for all of these undergraduate degrees qualify to apply for a School of Physics Entrance Scholarships

Natural Sciences

The School of Natural Sciences conducts research and delivers teaching on all aspects of the natural world, from the formation of the earth, the behaviour of the environment, the evolution and ecology of its organisms and its interactions with human society. We are engaged with solving some of the major challenges facing human society through our teaching, research and partnership with industry and policy development both nationally and globally. 

The School offers nine undergraduate degrees and three taught Masters Courses mirroring the school's research activities.

The principal undergraduate honours degree course in the School of Chemistry provides students with a broad base in the subject, with approximately equal time being given to each of Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. The School also teaches four-year honours degree courses in Chemistry with Molecular Modelling and in Medicinal Chemistry.The latter is especially tuned to fostering and training the creative talents and skills required for the pharmaceutical industry, which is a major employer in Ireland.

The School also teaches, in conjunction with the School of Physics, the Moderatorship in Nanochemistry, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials (N-PCAM) - an honours course specializing in the study of materials for electronic, optoelectronic and related applications. The School also provides modules in Chemistry to other Science students, and to students of Engineering and Health Sciences.

The School has an active research programme that spans all sub-disciplines of Chemistry, and is involved in a great many inter-departmental and international research programmes.

Genetics & Microbiology

The School of Genetics and Microbiology offers three undergraduate degree courses. Students pursuing Moderatorships in Genetics or Microbiology enter College through the general Science entry (CAO code TR071). These students spend two years taking general science courses before opting to spend a further two years in the School taking either Genetics or Microbiology. The Human Genetics degree (CAO code TR073) operates by direct entry and accepts students directly from secondary school.

The School of Genetics and Microbiology comprises the Smurfit Institute of Genetics and the Moyne Institute for Preventative Medicine. The School is characterised by its vibrant teaching and progressive research programme.

Biochemistry & Immunology

The School of Biochemistry and Immunology offers undergraduate programmes in Biochemistry, Immunology and Molecular Medicine. For entry into these degree programmes, students must first complete 2 years (Junior & Senior Freshman) study in the general TR071 Science Course, following on with 2 years (Junior & Senior Sophister) specialisation in their selected moderatorship.

The School also provides courses to students taking degree programmes in Neuroscience, Human Health & Disease, Science, Pharmacy and Medicine. The School's commitment to providing a rich educational environment for the next generation of undergraduate and graduate students is reflected in a dynamic, research-led curriculum that covers the most topical issues in research today.

The Moderatorship Course in Mathematics in the School of Mathematics is a programme of undergraduate study leading to the award of a B.A. (Mod) in Mathematics. The aim of this course is to provide students with a firm foundation in all the basic areas of mathematics and then allow them to specialize in those areas that most suit their interests and their talents. The School also provides modules in Mathematics to students of Engineering, Science and Computer Science. The Schools undergraduate programmes also include Moderatorships in Theoretical Physics and Two Subject Moderatorship in Mathematics

Research interest in the Mathematics Department is enormously varied; ranging from the abstract ideas of differential geometry and analysis to practical ideas of numerical analysis; modelling and computer algorithms; the nature of fundamental particles and general relativity; non-linear systems and fluid mechanics. This departmental diversity is reflected in the specialist sophister courses available to students.

Science Course Office

The first two years of the Science Course are designed to introduce you to and train you in the fundamental sciences. By the end of the Senior Freshman (second) year you will have moved far beyond the extent of science as it is taught at school and will understand better where your real interests lie. At this point you have the opportunity to focus on one of sixteen specialist areas for your final two years.
Teaching is by lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, so you will become familiar with laboratory practice and the methodology of scientific research from the first year. Smaller seminar classes and group tutorials mean that you will also be able to discuss course work with lecturers and other students in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
